It's true. I spend a whole lot of money on groceries buying things such as organic, free-range, grass-fed, natural etc. I don't go out to eat a lot, I don't go to the mall, I use extra money on groceries.
I've been told that it's a waste, but there are certain things that I just will not buy or feed to my family. It's not just a matter of organic vs. non-organic. This article that was shared with me, I think, explains a lot.
7 Foods You Should Never Eat
and my favorite farm:
Graham Farms - Omega Meats. "Why You Should Know Your Farmer."
Anything missing from my lists?

Loved that article on the seven foods.
We spend a lot on food as well. I have this conversation at least once a month. We shop at a farmers market, have organic produce delivered and get our beat from a local butcher who gets all of his meat from local farms.
UGH. I hate Fox News and I generally feel as if they're sensationalists/propaganda-fuelers. But... alas, that article might have a point.
You don't even WANT to know the cost for "organic" stuff down here. IT's about 3 - 5x what is it in the U.S... IF you can find it.
Canned tomatoes? Crap.
I have made the switch to organic milk and definitely notice the difference. I still feel like, in Toledo Oh, local apples are better than the organic products that are available at our grocery stores.
