or are you doing it because you fear what could be coming?
I'm afraid that I'm either out of touch or irresponsible because I don't feel like anything has hit us yet... nothing really feels any different... although our investment statement hasn't come in the mail yet...

1. We're unloading our house, therefore not paying a mortgage on a place that we visit for approximately 25 days a year. (This also helps with $1600-$2000 plane trips to the vacation destination capital of the midwest, Toledo.)
2. I think twice when I want un-necessary items at the grocery store. (Do I REALLY need an $8 bag of beef jerky?)
3. I haven't bought a pair of shoes in what seems like years.
4. Nor have I bought "expensive" makeup.
5. We eat in a LOT more often. (A normal LUNCH down here is about $50 USD, sans alcohol, for 2 people.)
6. We've limited our Costco visits to ONLY when it's necessary and not over-buying for the future. (It all goes bad, any way.)
7. I canceled a couple of magazine subscriptions.
8. I'm either borrowing books or buying them used on amazon. (No library here.)
9. Hmmm... that's about it.
Things I will NOT get rid of, just yet:
1. My frequent trips to the liquor store to buy wine.
2. My Friday cleaning lady.
i'm trying to spend a lot less on everything. case in point: today my groceries for the week only cost $73. normally for our little family of 4, it's at least $100. i only bought what i needed...nothing more. i know our 401K has been hit hard. but we still have at least 20 years til my husband retires, so i think we're OK there.
i would just really like the candidates to start focusing on the economy and reassuring the voters...rather than focusing on things like radicals from the 1960s who don't matter and personal attacks and name calling (from both sides, thank you very much).
Saving a lot more.
I just switched jobs so I don't have any money anyway so I can't buy anything extra regardless of our economy.
On a side note (and more relative to your post) I got gas at Kroger yesterday for $2.76! I was so excited. It was listed for $2.96 but I got the 20 cents off b.c I have a Kroger plus card.
We've lost quite a bit of money in investments, but not nearly as much as people who are older or richer than us. Thankfully, we are young and not approaching retirement with our savings taken right out from under us.
We probably spend the same amount on groceries, and make sacrifices in other areas in order to be able to eat well.
I definitely do not shop as often as I used to. And I now use more drugstore brands vs. salon/department store brand beauty products.
Actually, I think this all has less to do with the state of the economy and more to do with the fact that I only work two days a month.
