There are worse ones than me

RE: helicopter parents

Time magazine tells of a child abuse case in Italy. It centers on the overprotective mother and grandparents of a 12-year-old boy known only as Luca.

Prosecutors say that:

• Luca was not allowed to play with other children, go to church, participate in sports, or leave the house before or after school.

• He was sent to school with his snacks already cut into bite-size portions for him.

• He was both physically and psychologically stunted from such around-the-clock doting.

• He didn't know how to run.

• He had the motor skills of a 3-year-old child.

The boy's mother and grandfather have already been convicted of child abuse and are appealing the verdict. The grandmother is still facing charges.

In this case, do you think overparenting equals child abuse?

Um, this story is AMAZING. I cannot believe what some people think is "doing the best for your child." That's crazy!

hmmmm, that is interesting and very sad. It seems like some form of neglect, though not intentional, took place. After he was not progressing physically or socially you think something should be done. Is the boy happy? Stupid question as I imagine no child would be happy like that...but if he is and they were not intentionally trying to hurt their kid, then I don't know if it is abuse or maybe something else.

Unfortunatly I think many times parents don't know how to take care of themselves and therefore take care of their kids like they would themselves or are trying to do what they think is right and it causes alot of harm. I don't know what I think. How about all those parents who feed their kids fast food every day a couple times and their kids are overweight or have health problems, that seems like it could be wrong too....though not as extreme as this case.

I'm not sure if this is considered child abuse, but it is very heartbreaking that this 12 yr. old is unable to do "normal" 12 yr. old activities.

My parents' neighbor has a grown child who is 28 yrs. old who has never been to school, never had a job, will never live on his own, and has never really interacted outside of their family or close family friends. Their reason why is because he's deaf. Every time I see my heart aches because they stole his life from him. :(

Some people are just so closed minded that they can't accept that their way isn't working.
