If the universe is everything, and scientists say that the universe is expanding what is it expanding into?
It's things like this that because of my OCD, I will think about this, try to wrap my mind around it, until my head pops off or I just fall over like a fainting goat.
How is it possible... where does the universe end... why are we here... aaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!! (plop)

seriously...i tend to think about the same things. i often wonder "where exactly does the universe end? and what is beyond it?" and then my brain starts to hurt...i thought i was the only one who pondered things like this!
The universe is expanding into another universe, because as our universe is expanding, another is compressing, leading to an eventual death of a universe.
At least that's the SciFi answer!
Questions like this make me wish I still smoked pot. Then, I'd have a fantastic answer to your question.
(Watching Yo Gabba Gabba makes me wish I still smoked pot, as well.)
Isn't Yo Gabba Gabba crazy??? It's like you took acid!
Kristen that makes me want to freak out.
I am also always thinking of this kind of stuff and lucky (and sometimes unlucky) for me I married a man who is a fountain of information and actually reads steven hawking because it interests him. It was actually one of the things that first attracted me to him.
I could listen to my husband talk for hours, and I have. And if you want a real mind fuck, then come down and "hang out" in our basement for a few hours and listen to my husband! hehe
So anyways, about the question. First, the universe ends when everything that physically exists ends. When time, space, matter and energy all stop then so has the universe. The universe is just all those things combined.
Also, no Universe can affect another Universe or else they would be considered part of one single universe. There is a void of time (K. remember the void) between universes and so each one is completly seperate from another. So even though our universe expands, it does not affect any other universe out there. And if you believe in multiple universes then there could be many different universes out there with people thinking the same thing we are!
And the universe does keep expanding b/c of the energy that was created from the big bang. Eventually the energy will reach the point where it can go no further and the universe will expand no more. Like a balloon. You blow the balloon up until it can not go any further then it would be like if you slowly let the air out of it. The universe would then contract until there was nothing left in it. But of course that is a gagillion years away.
I know you were not looking for a long answer like this, the whole concept is truly freaky. To think about how much bigger this world is then just us and how much more is going on out there is so fascinating!!!
P.S. I want a fainting goat!
(faints)
I think that as far as the universe expanding, energy is creating more matter, but I think it's just that we are able to see further now with current technology...
p.s. I may have mentioned this before, but yo gabba gabba...never seen it, but I did catch an episode of Big Comfy Couch? That show can make you want to be destructive. She pretended to be a cat and started "washing" her face with her "paws." I tore up the waiting room (I was in a docs office.)
WK...you just made my brain explode. OUCH.
yeah, sorry about that. ;)
I have better things to do than to keep track of the universe's expansion.
Bye.
Going to online shop.
